What is Zootopia at Shanghai Disneyland?

Zootopia is the park’s newest land and, for now, the only one of its kind anywhere: Shanghai Disneyland is the first and so far only Disney resort to build a land themed to the film. It opened on 20 December 2023 as the park’s newest themed land, and that combination of “brand new” and “found nowhere else” is exactly why it draws the biggest crowds in the park.

What is there to ride in Zootopia?

The headliner is Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, a trackless dark ride and the single most in-demand new attraction in the park. Instead of running on a visible rail, the ride vehicles move and pivot freely across the floor, which lets the scenes play out around you from changing angles as you follow Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde through the city.

It is a story-led ride rather than a thrill machine, so it suits most of the family. It is widely reported to carry no minimum height, which would make it rideable by younger children — but we have not been able to verify that against an official source, so treat it as likely rather than certain and check the height sign at the entrance on the day.

Why is Zootopia so busy — and when should I go?

Because it is the newest land and unique to Shanghai, Zootopia consistently posts some of the longest waits in the park, and Hot Pursuit is the ride everyone heads for first. Weekends, the summer school break and Chinese public holidays are the worst of it.

There are three ways to handle the queue:

1. Ride at rope drop. Make Zootopia your first stop when the park opens — usually around 08:30, though the day’s hours are only published about two weeks ahead, so confirm before you go.
2. Ride at the end of the day. The last hour before closing is the other reliable window, once the day-trippers have left.
3. Buy Disney Premier Access for Hot Pursuit. It is a paid, per-attraction skip-the-queue option with date-based pricing; the tickets page has the current cost and how it works.

Trying to walk on at midday is the one thing that reliably fails.

Who is Zootopia best for?

It rewards two groups most. Fans of the film get the fullest payoff — the land leans hard on recognisable locations and characters, and the ride is built around them. Families do well too, since Hot Pursuit is a gentle, story-driven ride rather than a coaster, and the streets themselves are an attraction to wander.

If Zootopia is your priority, it is worth pairing with the nearby lands so you are not crossing the whole park twice. Tomorrowland, home of the TRON coaster, and Fantasyland with the castle are the natural neighbours to fold into the same stretch of the day. Our day plan sequences them into a single rope-drop route.
