What is Gardens of Imagination?

Gardens of Imagination is a themed land you will not find in any other Disney park — it exists only in Shanghai. Instead of a single big attraction, it is built as a spread of landscaped gardens that fill the space between the entrance and the Enchanted Storybook Castle. That location is the whole point: almost everyone crosses this land twice a day, once on the way in and again when the parade or fireworks pull the crowds back toward the castle.

The land was shaped with Chinese guests in mind, and it shows in the theming more than the ride list. This is the softest, most stroller-friendly part of the park, and the one where you will spend the most time simply standing and watching rather than queuing.

Where do you watch the parade and the evening castle show?

Here. Gardens of Imagination wraps around the open hub in front of the castle, so its lawns and walkways form the natural grandstand for the daytime parade and the evening show projected onto the Enchanted Storybook Castle.

For a front-row curb position, stake out a spot 30–45 minutes before the parade steps off; for the evening castle show, aim for a clear sightline to the castle face rather than the parade route. Times move with the season and are only published a couple of weeks out, so confirm the day’s schedule when you plan your day rather than trusting a fixed hour. If you would rather not lose 45 minutes standing, ride the gentle attractions nearby first and drift into position as the crowd thickens.

What rides are here, and are they right for young kids?

The land’s two signature rides are Dumbo the Flying Elephant and the Fantasia Carousel — both slow, both aimed at young families, neither with any thrill element. There is nothing here to intimidate a toddler, which makes Gardens of Imagination the easiest land in the park to visit with small children or a stroller.

Because these rides are gentle and popular with families, their queues build through the middle of the day. Ride them early, or slot them in during the parade when much of the crowd migrates to the curb.

What is the Garden of the Twelve Friends?

It is the land’s most distinctive feature: a walk-through garden that recasts the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac as Disney and Pixar characters, each sign rendered as its own mosaic. Rather than a rat, an ox or a tiger, you find familiar Disney faces standing in for each year.

It is a small thing to walk, but a telling one — this garden is one of the clearest signals that Shanghai Disneyland was designed for its host country rather than transplanted whole from Florida or California. It photographs well and takes only a few minutes, so it is an easy stop while you wait for a parade slot to open up.

How does this land connect the rest of the park?

Gardens of Imagination is the pivot between the front and the heart of the park. It sits directly behind Mickey Avenue, the entrance land you pass through first, and opens straight onto Fantasyland and the Enchanted Storybook Castle behind it. In practice you will pass through it every time you move between the gate and the castle hub.
